We will begin this wonderful expedition on March 29th – April 8th. All Aboard! Our first few days will be spent in Amsterdam, where we will be whisked away on our ship, the beautiful Viking Spirit. The Viking Spirit offers an intimate atmosphere where passengers can really get to know fellow vacationers. The ship features all “river view” staterooms, elegantly appointed public areas, fine dining, and spacious outside decks to promenade and take in the fresh air and breathtaking scenery. While in Amsterdam, we will also be visiting the Van Gogh Museum, which features this magnificent and legendary artist’s works and contemporaries. A canal tour by glass-topped boat, takes you on a journey through the city’s Golden Age. Next stop, Hoorn and Volendam! We will go on a guided walk through Hoorn’s cobbled streets where we will see the age-old cheese warehouse and the Westfries Museum located in the town’s main square! From there we cruise on through to Volendam, a quaint fishing village where fishermen still dress in traditional costume. Here, we can stroll through the village and visit a charming local bakery shop while we look for treasures to take home! Our next adventure begins in Arnhem, where we journey into the 17th Century Paleis Het Loo, which has been the Dutch royal family’s summer home for over 300 years! We will take a guided tour through the beauty of this age-old wonder, where we see beautifully furnished rooms and architecture. An old-world garden completes this tour, and will amaze you with all its charm. From here we cruise through to Nijmegen, where the evening is yours to do as you please! Get ready for more excitement as we journey through Dordrecht, into Kinderdijk, where we can bask in the greatness of their 18th Century system of windmills. We will tour a working windmill at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. After, we will voyage back to Dordrecht, where you are free to explore Dordrecht’s Old Quarter, city gate, and 14th Century church. Our next city, Antwerp, is full of beauty and splendor. A city tour features the Cathedral of Our Lady with its three monumental altarpieces painted by Peter Paul Rubens, the Grand Square, which is surrounded by the Golden Age Town Hall and guild halls, and Steen Castles, which is Antwerp’s oldest building. After Antwerp, we travel on to one of the oldest towns in Flanders, Brugge. Our city walk visits the Church of Our Lady, with its famous Madonna and Child sculpted by Michelangelo. Also explore the Beguinage, a hidden courtyard inhabited by nuns.
The next journey is quite eventful; the Viking Spirit cruises into three towns in one day! First we walk through medieval Middleburg with its dramatic 16th Century Gothic town hall. From here, travel to Neeltje Jans Expo to learn more about how the Delta Works protect Holland from the sea. See the hydraulic lock system and walk along the massive dam.
