As an added measure, you do have an option of placing a “Fraud Alert” on your credit report. The alert tells creditors to follow certain procedures before they open any new accounts in your name or make any changes to your existing accounts. This also allows you free copies of your credit report and enables you to see any inquiries from companies you have not contacted, accounts you did not open, or any unexplained debts on your accounts. The three nationwide consumer reporting agencies all have toll-free phone numbers for placing an initial 9-day fraud alert. A phone call to one company is sufficient to have the alert placed with all three agencies.
